Athenry Castle

The sun made a rare appearance on our day out to Athenry Castle, last week.

This typical small Norman castle was built in 1235 by the De Bermingham family and it was built to protect the people and animals living inside the town walls.

What a fantastic day we had. Big thanks to our lovely tour guide, Fiona, for being so kind and informative.

We all had a super time.

 Listening with great interest...
Up we go to the Great Hall.

The castle has been restored beautifully.
 Cool!

These beautiful stone carved windows are usually seen in churches are a rare sight in a castle. These are special to us here, in Athenry Castle.

Form an orderly queue! Guess what proved to be the most popular sight in the castle?

You guessed it...the loo...or the Garderobe as it was called! This special room projected from the castle wall. It contained a special seat with a hole that fell out into an outdoor pit in the ground below it.
We really appreciate our bathrooms now after visiting here!

 "What's up there?"

"Is that where we go if we don't do our homework?" :)

We loved learning all about The Loops.

We said hello to special residents nesting in the castle.

 The Clarin River view outside.

Time for some fun in the sun!
