Athenry Castle with 3rd & 4th Class

All of 3rd and 4th class went on a tour to Athenry castle and Athenry town. Athenry is a medieval town and was built by Meiler De Birmingham in the Middle Ages. It was once surrounded by high stone walls, towers and you could only enter through one of the gates. They spoke French inside the walls of the town and everyone outside spoke Irish. There was five gates but now there is only one and that one is called the North Gate but we call it The Arch. The towers were used as lookouts. There were around nine or ten towers. The walls were one to two metres thick and five metres high.It was built so that Meiler De Birmingham would be safe and that the Normans would be safe too.The toilet in the castle was called a garderobe. You have to do your buisiness in a hole in a wooden hole and prisoners would pick up all the gross stuff. The castle is the oldest building in Athenry. The battlement was used for any attackers  that shot the Normans they would hide behind the wall and then pop out and shoot.
